As host of the podcast Radical Nurse Talk launched in October 2023, I have had the great privilege to speak with nurses about the important, yet often invisible relational work they do to help patients and families facing serious illness and/or serious health situations – such as mental health crisis, perinatal loss, grief, MAiD, critical care, caregiving, palliative care, dementia. I have been humbled – blown away – by what nurses have shared about their relational work (aka communication).
Nurses’ communication does matter! We need to talk about that – beyond handovers, advocacy, flow charts, patient teaching, etc. Our amazing guests in RNT Seasons 1 and 2 make clear that nurse’s relational expertise is crucial and yet, it is so often unrecognized. To the guests who shared expertise, who inspired and mentored in their stories and to the listeners, I say thank you.
